This afternoon Microsoft released a fix for the severe Internet Explorer vulnerability that prompted a warning from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on Monday. Unexpectedly, a patch was also released for Windows XP, though Microsoft continues to encourage its customers to move off of the operating system in the announcement.

The patch is effective for all affected versions, 6 through 11.

Internet Explorer will be updated automatically to enable the fix for most users. However, if your company does not have Automatic Update enabled, your IT administrators will have to push out the patch.

A few days ago Adobe also released a patch for Flash, which hackers were using to exploit the security flaw in Internet Explorer.
