Reflections on ILTA Evolve: A First-Time Volunteer’s Experience
Before delving into my personal conference highlights, I would like to provide a brief overview of the ILTA Evolve conference and what inspired me to volunteer.
The International Legal Technology Association, or ILTA for short, is ‘the trusted global resource community for legal technologists’. Evolve, a dynamic conference born out what was historically ILTA LegalSec, seeks to bring together professionals who specialize in legal technology to explore cutting-edge advancements. This three-day event is based on two pivotal tracks: Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cybersecurity.
My Why
My decision to volunteer this year stemmed from three main factors.
Over the past 17 years working in legal IT, I have attended dozens of ILTA events, both as a speaker and an attendee. These learning opportunities have proved invaluable, keeping me current on the latest technologies and connected with my peer group. All the ways I’ve benefited inspired me to contribute the community wide knowledge exchange in a deeper way.
Additionally, I was curious about the behind-the-scenes efforts. I wanted to learn about the topic selection and development process, knowing the outcome has an immeasurable impact on the productivity and security of today’s most prominent law firms.
As my role transitioned from technical engineer to management consultant, I saw volunteering as the perfect opportunity to connect with others, explore the technical topics presented in sessions, and learn how firms tackle challenges. Moreover, my role reminds me of the importance of empathy in helping clients navigate obstacles, a lesson reinforced through conversations and observations during the event.
Valuable Content
The sold-out conference kicked off Sunday, April 28th with a welcome reception, a clear indicator of the growing enthusiasm in the community. Engaged participants packed the AI and Cybersecurity sessions and workshops where the number of raised hands and snapping cameras suggested highly relevant and compelling content.
AI Highlights
The sessions I attended, and the two I helped coordinate, delivered exceptional insights. One standout session on AI Prompts explored the hurdles firms face when integrating AI tools, emphasizing the value of Prompt Libraries for consistent workflows and results.
Another, focused on extending Copilot beyond M365, examined the current limitations of M365’s integration with external data sources. The AI track concluded with a session on how AI is reshaping legal financial processes, sparking discussions about speed, tools, and ROI calculations. Real world examples highlighted the transformative potential of these systems, encouraging firms to investigate more.
Cybersecurity Coverage
The cybersecurity track was equally impactful, reminding attendees of the critical need to safeguard data. A session on Vendor Management Cybersecurity offered practical strategies for managing third party vendors within a firm’s risk framework. From straightforward to complicated approaches, the session outlined a tiered journey for firms to refine their vendor oversight as they mature. Across the board, these sessions provided invaluable content relevant to firms of varying sizes and stages of technological adoption.
Experience Overall
Evolve succeeded in creating a lineup of speakers who shared insights into current trends and a glimpse of the road ahead. As a volunteer, I had the privilege of connecting with professionals from diverse backgrounds and roles, enriching my experience. The focus on emerging legal technology topics provided the ideal forum for fostering collaboration and shared growth.
Looking Forward
For anyone considering volunteering with ILTA, I wholeheartedly encourage taking the leap. This organization thrives on the dedication of bright, driven individuals who come together to advance the industry and there is no better way to contribute while gaining unparalleled learning opportunities along the way.
