Calling all
RIM/Blackberry Enthusiasts
If
you are hooked on your RIM/Blackberry and find it indispensable,
this is the web page for you –
RIM Road – The Complete RIM Blackberry Information Resource.
It contains a wealth of RIM software add-ons, helpful hints,
message boards, and Today’s RIM Headlines.
One of the
more intriguing software products at RIM Road is the
itrezzoAgent Applet. This software product provides simplified
access to e-mail attachments on your Rim/Blackberry. The applet
includes a Rich Text and Spreadsheet viewer as well as the
capability to direct the attachment to a printer or fax
machine. The only caution is the free Shareware version sends
the attachment from your RIM over the Internet to be converted
to viewable text by the itrezzo server. If security of your
documents being sent over the Internet is an issue, you should
purchase the Enterprise version of the software and build an itrezzo server inside your firewall.
Installing the itrezzoAgent is not for the faint hearted. You
may have to erase all of the applications and data on your RIM
before restoring it with the itrezzo software. You should
probably work with someone on your IT staff or contact us for
assistance. To see the itrezzo software in action, give us a
call or go to
itrezzo’s web-site.
Protect the Confidentiality
of your E-mail Distribution List for Outlook Users
E-mail has become so ubiquitous
in our day-to-day lives that we sometimes overlook or forget the
obvious. When you are sending an e-mail from Outlook to
multiple recipients and do not want to divulge the addresses of
the other recipients, remember to enter the e-mail addresses in
the Bcc section of the Select Names dialog box. To access
this section, click on either the To or Cc button to the left of
the e-mail address field. Enter the e-mail address in the
Bcc dialog box. None of the e-mail addresses will appear
with your message. So whether you are being driven by
e-mail etiquette or legal constraints, remember the Bcc field.
Another little known fact about
the Bcc field that people do not realize until it may be too
late concerns the use of Reply All. If you receive an
e-mail as a Bcc recipient, and you use Reply All to send a
response, the response will go to all recipients including
individuals who did not know you were a Bcc recipient.
Remembering these helpful hints may save you much embarrassment
and you may also want to pass these hints along to other members
in your firm or department.
A Handy Reference Tool for
the Internet
We
were recently reminded in a column by Walter Mossberg in the
Wall Street Journal of a handy quick reference tool called
Atomica. When you see a word or phrase you want to learn
more about, simply place your cursor over the word, hold down
the ALT key, and click. Atomica will pop up a window with a
definition and other relevant information. Want more
information about a company, ALT-click on the name and Atomica
will provide an instant profile including current stock
information and a link to company news. The free version
available at Atomica’s web-site requires an Internet connection
to retrieve its information.
Atomica also
has an enterprise version of their software for a fee that would
allow a law firm to link to content contained in a variety of
firm data bases. Whether it is a legal term or a company name,
you can customize the information provided to your end users.
For more information,
contact us or visit
Atomica’s web-site.
30,000 mile system
check-up
Just
like cars, law office systems usually run fine with routine
maintenance. That includes daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly
checks on network performance and capacity, security and service
pack software updates, and hundreds of other tasks. Balancing
the need to keep up-to-date with the constant stream of new
information on security and maintenance issues while
simultaneously responding to the myriad tasks of urgent and
unplanned system fixes, user issues, and new projects is a
daunting challenge for any IS professional or legal
administrator. As a result, many firms are forced to cut corners
on maintenance, which increases the risk of security and
performance failures, and then hope for the best.

Microsoft
Releases Security Scanner
Speaking of
security audits, as part of a firm-wide initiative to improve
the security of their products, Microsoft has released a free
tool to scan for missing patches and security vulnerabilities in
its operating systems and enterprise software. The software
covered includes Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP,
Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 and 5.0, SQL Server 7.0
and 2000, Internet Explorer (IE) 5.01 and later, and Office 2000
and XP. The tool is known as
Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA).
The
command-line tool can be used by Network Administrators to check
the patch status of all the machines in a network from a central
location.
The tool does this by referring to an XML database that's
constantly updated by Microsoft. In addition, the tool also
checks passwords and security setting for both PCs and servers.
This tool should not be run by end users since it requires
administrative access to all PCs. Before running the tool, we
recommend that you review the
MBSA technical white paper, or
contact us for more information…
This Month's Answer
Some laptop manufacturers will
not cover accidental damage to a laptop. A simple LCD panel
replacement could cost as much as $1000. Some companies offer
warranty upgrades. Dell for instance, offers
CompleteCare, which
covers drops, spills and breaks (all accidental
notebook damage except fire, theft, loss, and intentional
damage) for three years. Check with your laptop manufacturer
before purchase, to understand what warranty may be best for
you. |
