Most cybercrime is breaking and entering. The criminals survey the neighborhood looking for unlocked doors, open windows, and homes unprotected by alarms. An unpatched server, an unencrypted backup tape, a successful phishing attack: there are hundreds of small operational vulnerabilities in every law firm. Even a great deal of money spent on network security will not help you if you leave the house without closing the window.

The biggest security threat to most law firms is a reactive, ad hoc approach to information security. You might shut the window, but leave the back door unlocked.

A risk assessment is not ‘insurance’ against a breach. It is a map of your vulnerabilities, large and small. It provides the insight needed to quickly address serious problems and to build a plan to fix smaller problems over time.

During this session, you will see how a successful risk assessment is carried out using a standard methodology (ISO 27001/2). We will demonstrate how managing risk, as opposed to reacting to vulnerabilities, enables a strategic engagement with firm management and a positive dialogue with clients. We will also review best practices for managing an incident in which a security breach has occurred.
