How to Be Ready for the Next Disaster

disaster recovery law firmsHurricane Sandy prompted me to talk with a number of law firms about how they coped with the storm — What worked and what will they do to better prepare for the future?

The Defense Bar site, DRI, published the full article on their website:
How to Be Ready for the Next Disaster

What worked for us?

  • We really appreciated having WhereRU so we could know that all our people were OK.

  • Have a backup email service like Mimecast or some other cloud-based service. Everyone in the Northeast understood that the storm was causing severe disruptions. Still, clients in other areas want to communicate with your firm.

  • Have a Unified Communications tool like Microsoft Lync. All you need is an Internet connection, and it's almost like being in the office — You can make calls right from your laptop!

  • Identify locations with good Wifi connections before you need them. If your power or Internet service is out, you'll have a backup plan.

I couldn't get a good connection in a coffee shop as too many people were trying to connect at once. So, I went to my car dealership, and got a great Wifi connection — I had the place all to myself.

What did you learn from the storm, and what have you put in place for your firm? Please leave a comment and let me know your ideas!
